THE SOUND OF THE SUBURBS (Greatest Hits)
This was written about a group of youngsters called the Hampton Crew who came to see The Members from the suburbs. they included Mike Lacey, Kevin and Neville Topping. At the time there was a clique of ”cool arty people” who thought they owned punk rock, we knew that it belonged to everyone and it is a rallying call for all suburban and country punks.
OFFSHORE BANKING BUSINESS (Greatest Hits)
I wrote this song at my desk when I worked in a bank, it is about how large companies and rich individuals avoid tax and see themselves above the law. Capital Flight and tax avoidance is a huge problem all over the world. It is perhaps more pertinent today then when It was written . It is sometimes the duty of a politically conscious songwriter to use his art to illustrate injustice. Once again Nick Tesco championed this song by encouraging me and insisting it be a single. Steve Lillywhite arranged for Reggae Legend Rico Rodriguez attend the magical recording session at Island studios.
WORKING GIRL (Greatest Hits)
This song was written about Nicks girlfriend and muse Annie Day. Being a musician it is very important to be in a relationship with someone who has a regular income. It was a huge hit in the USA, Australia and New Zealand for The Members. It was produced by a genius called Martin Rushent who also sang backing vocals on it.
